Fingerprint cards, 1947-1956.

The Board of Corrections was established in 1953 (Ala. Code 23-31-45 [1953]). Prior to 1953, the agency existed as the Dept. of Corrections and Institutions. Duties of the Board of Corrections include making necessary rules and regulations to promote health and hygiene among the prisoners, supervising and managing the State penal and correctional institutions and prisoners, operating a system of diversified prison industries, and maintaining all necessary records regarding prisons and inmates. This series consists of fingerprint cards used by the Board of Corrections. A fingerprint card consists of two sides: one side contains finger prints and the other gives information about the prisoner. This information includes name, birth date, Social Security number, any identifying scars, a prison identification number, and in some cases, an FBI identification number. These cards are created at the time the inmate enters a prison facility. The cards are filed according to a red number listed on each card. The filing system was used by the department until August 1983 when the red number was abolished.
